Below is a summary of the benefits offered with the Harvard University Student Health Program. Please refer to their website to learn more about these benefits.

Medical
Coverage

The Harvard University Student Health Program (HUSHP) is comprised of 2 parts:

  • The Student Health Fee covers most services on campus at Harvard University Health Services (HUHS), including internal medicine, medical specialty care, mental health services, physical therapy, radiology, and urgent care.
  • The Student Health Insurance Plan is a PPO plan providing hospital/specialty coverage both in- and out-of-network through Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) of Massachusetts. Coverage includes: ambulatory surgery, radiology services, obstetrics/gynecology, emergency room visits, hospitalizations, diagnostic lab services, prescription drug coverage, limited specialty and mental health care outside of HUHS. You may enroll your eligible dependents in HUSHP, the online application and rates will be available at hushp.harvard.edu

HGSU-UAW Health Reimbursement Fund
The contract between Harvard University and the Harvard Graduate Student Union (HGSU-UAW) establishes a fund of $250,000 for reimbursement of any copays and other out-of-pocket medical expenses that salaried student workers had to incur under the Harvard University Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). 

Dental Coverage

Students have two optional dental plans. Enrollment or renewal is not automatic. Student who enroll in either dental insurance plan will receive a stipend to cover 75 percent of the cost of the preventative plan.

  • Dental Blue Preventive, this plan only provides coverage for diagnostic and preventive care, such as routine cleanings. If you need other care, such as fillings and root canals, you’ll be responsible for paying the full cost of those services.
  • Dental Blue Comprehensive, this is a good option if you want the most dental protection. In addition to diagnostic and preventive care, you’ll receive additional coverage for basic and major services, such as fillings, crowns, and root canals.

The contract between Harvard University and the Harvard Graduate Student Union (HGSU-UAW) establishes a Dental Fund of $125,000 to help defray the cost of premiums and copays under the Harvard University student dental insurance plan, and dental expenses in general.

Prescription Drug Plan Prescription drug coverage is included in the Student Health Insurance Plan, and there is no dollar limit on this benefit. Prescriptions may be filled at the HUHS Pharmacy or any OptumRx-participating pharmacy throughout the United States.
Mental Health Coverage
  • The Student Health Fee covers mental health visits at Harvard University Health Services (HUHS). There is no visit limit at HUHS; the number of visits is based on medical necessity as determined by the provider.
  • The Student Health Insurance Plan covers mental health inpatient and outpatient services outside of Harvard University Health Services (HUHS).
Vision Care The Student Health Fee offers coverage for routine and non-routine vision care. You can access vision care services at HUHS.
Travel Coverage Students enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan are covered throughout the United States and abroad.
Maternity Maternity services include all medical care related to pregnancy and childbirth. There is no visit limit when you receive maternity care from obstetricians, gynecologists, or nurse midwives.
