Work in my laboratory is directed at understanding the innate immune response to bacterial enteropathogens. Our focus is on Salmonella Typhimurium and Salmonella Typhi, which cause acute gastroenteritis and typhoid fever, respectively. We use bacterial mutagenesis approaches, cell culture systems and mouse infections to characterize the molecular mechanisms that are involved in the interactions between these pathogens and host macrophages and intestinal epithelial cells. We are particularly interested in how these interactions are influenced by nutrient deficiencies, a problem that is widely prevalent in the developing world and that can affect the course of infectious disease. The results of our studies are expected to provide novel insights into Salmonella pathogenesis, and to faciltate the development of new treatment and preventive strategies for gastroenteritis and typhoid.
